root canal therapy in edgecliff (endodontics)
Are you worried about a decayed tooth causing pain? Maybe it’s time for a root canal.
Many people panic when they hear the term ‘root canal’ but it is not as painful as it is usually thought to be. In fact, you will be given local anaesthesia to numb the area and you will barely feel any pain.
The thing is, sometimes decay can set in so deep that you have to clean out the infected tooth pulp in order to save the tooth. And that is precisely what a root canal does.
Our dentists perform this procedure on a regular basis and will be more than happy to answer your queries. We believe in treating our patients compassionately – our friendly staff will go out of their way to make your root canal treatment as pleasant an experience as possible.

Do you really need a root canal procedure?
The short answer is, yes, some problems do need a root canal to save the tooth. It is a much preferable option than losing the tooth to infection, which may lead to a host of other problems later.
Patients come to us with many dental problems which require a root canal. Some of them include the following:
- Pain when chewing food
- Loose tooth along with toothache
- Swelling in your gums
- Swelling in your face
- Tooth sensitivity and pain when biting down
- Spontaneous pain that occurs without any apparent reason
If you face any of the above problems, come in for a check-up. Of course, each problem will be evaluated individually, but most of the above issues are caused by cavities that have been left untreated and may possibly require a root canal treatment.
What does the procedure involve?
Each individual tooth has an outer dental enamel and an inner core called the dental pulp. The pulp has nerve endings and can cause pain when infected with bacteria, but when the infection becomes extreme, the pulp region can die off and you may stop feeling pain. You will notice your tooth turning a darker shade when this happens. While there may not be pain, this situation is a serious one that needs immediate treatment.
Before the root canal procedure, we first conduct the oral examination. We may take an X-ray to understand the extent of damage to the tooth. Root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthesia. After the area has been numbed, the dentist removes the infected part of your tooth.
The infection is completely cleaned out and the inside of your tooth will be sterilised to receive an inert filling material. The tooth is filled and completely sealed off. After this heals, you will be fitted with a new crown that matches the other teeth so it looks natural.
